Product Description

As a lover of animals and nature, Beatrix Hathaway has always been more comfortable outdoors than in the ballroom. Even though she participated in the London season in the past, the classic beauty and free-spirited Beatrix has never been swept away or seriously courted…and she has resigned herself to the fate of never finding love. Has the time come for the most unconventional of the Hathaway sisters to settle for an ordinary man—just to avoid spinsterhood?

Captain Christopher Phelan is a handsome, daring soldier who plans to marry Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious flirt Prudence Mercer, when he returns from fighting abroad. But, as he explains in his letters to Pru, life on the battlefield has darkened his soul—and it’s becoming clear that Christopher won’t come back as the same man. When Beatrix learns of Pru’s disappointment, she decides to help by concocting Pru’s letters to Christopher for her. Soon the correspondence between Beatrix and Christopher develops into something fulfilling and deep…and when Christopher comes home, he’s determined to claim the woman he loves. What began as Beatrix’s innocent deception has resulted in the agony of unfulfilled love—and a passion that can’t be denied…

5 out of 5 stars Loved this novel, superb leads and a romantic story   September 8, 2010
Melissa (USA)
Well, I absolutely loved Lisa Kleypas's novel Love in the Afternoon. It might just be my favorite novel of hers, and that's amazing considering the previous novels this author has written, many of them are on my keeper shelf.

What makes this story so good are the characters, although the plot is ingenious too. Heroine Beatrix Hathaway is an animal lover, something I admired about her right away. She is unconventional but not arrogant and she is really kind. So when she discovers that her friend Prudence has received a letter from Captain Phelan, who is fighting in the Crimea, she is intrigued when he mentions a dog that needs training. Beatrix reads the letter and even though Captain Phelan has been less than kind to her in the past (he finds her strange) she begs to write to him when Pru decides not to correspond. Beatrix answers the letter signing Pru's name and a romance begins not with longing glances and stolen kisses but with special, romantic words on a page.

Christopher Phelan has no idea that the woman corresponding with him is Beatrix but he is enchanted and heartened whenever he receives a letter from his "Prudence." He writes back to her describing his life in the Crimea and his longing to be somewhere peaceful. He falls deeply in love with "Pru" and knows that she is the one for him.

Beatrix is heartsick because she is in love with Christopher but she is aware that he loves someone else and she feels he could never love her as she is awkward and so different than Prudence who is beautiful and refined. She halts the correspondence but not her feelings.

When Christopher returns home he is a changed man. He suffers from post traumatic stress disorder and his pain is evident in almost all his dealings. He believes though that Pru can help him become the man he use to be, little does he know that his true love is someone that keeps a menagerie of pets and loves the outdoors.

Lisa Kleypas so eloquently describes Beatrix's longing for Christopher. The reader never doubts her feelings. Christopher is a finely drawn character full of the misery of death and war yet searching for something better. Both characters are rich and their conversations are quite telling of their inner nature. Sometimes Beatrix is a bit bossy but she is never sharp and she recognizes her weaknesses. Christopher is overwhelmed with so many memories that he tries to maintain strict control of all aspects of his life. Beatrix has utter faith in Christopher and eventually he accepts her trust and becomes a better person because of her loyalty. Both of these characters are loyal, to each other, their friends and their families. This book is splendid and it was delightful to revisit with the wonderful Hathaway family.

I really enjoyed all the books in the Hathaway series. And while "Married by Morning" is my favorite (because I identify so much with Catherine), "Love in the Afternoon" is definitely the funniest. It's funny, sexy and endearing. I love the whole series.

3 out of 5 stars Last book in the Hathaway series   August 30, 2010
Sacramento Book Review (Sacramento, CA)
//Love in the Afternoon// is Lisa Kleypas' final historical romance about the Hathaway family. Beatrix is the last Hathaway sibling to marry and the central figure of this story. Her friend's almost fiancé, Captain Phelan, is fighting in the Crimean War and Beatrix, posing as her friend, ends up being the one to reply to his letters resulting in a deep connection between them. She promises her friend she will not tell him of the deception upon his return.

The book starts with the letters between Beatrix and Phelan which is a great way to get into the story. Their chemistry is immediate and obvious even in letter form. When Phelan returns he struggles to find his place at home after the war and to reconnect with the woman he thinks wrote the letters. While still containing the signature Kleypas' wit, this book is not exactly lighthearted. It is difficult for Phelan to reconcile Beatrix's deception and deal with his lingering stress from the war. These topics make for a rich story that is very engaging at the start. The last third of the book falls a little flat compared to the beginning, but this should still be an enjoyable read for romance fans.

This is the 5th Hathaway family book and this is Beatrix story. Beatrix is the youngest in the family and was always bring home animals and is a Hathaway which makes her even more unconventional. Beatrix starts writing to Captain Christopher Phelan while he is a war because he girlfriend Prudence Mercer became bored to the proess. Beatrix and Phelan start to fall for each on paper but when he comes back from the war - sparks fly -

I loved this story , the emotional effect of war was so well written and love story unfolded with amazing reality!
