Nice system, though power supply only meets minimum of Mobo specs December 27, 2008 John Kane 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a good system at a fair price. Windows experience index rates the 5 main components as follows. Processor 5.9, Memory, 5.9, Graphics (aero) 3.9, Gaming Graphics 3.0, and Primary Disk drive 5.9 When Windows Vista was first introduced, the highest rating for a computer was a 3.0 The reason that the gaming graphics only rates a 3.0 is because this computer has an onboard graphic chip instead of a card. So unless you upgrade the graphics you may not get peak performance from the aero interface under higher resolutions. Nor well it handle the 3D intensive latest games. Like most PC's built by the major companies, this PC ships with a 300 watt power supply. Three hundred watts is the minimum recommend by the Mobo mfg Asus. So before you upgrade to a new graphics card you need to install a higher watt PSU, since a GeForce 9500 has a minimum requirement of 350 watts while a Geforce 9800 GT has a min req of 400 watts. Plus any additional future upgrades also draw power. For business purposes you can just run this machine as is unless you need to do 3D graphics. Since I like to play a few games now and then, I went ahead and put in a TR2-430 Thermaltake PSU which has an excellent track record. I had to purchase a 4 pin to SATA adapter cable since the 2 SATA connectors were too close together in order to reach the SATA CD/DVD combo drive). The TR2-430 also features twin 80mm fans for extra cooling which is important with the added heat from a graphics card. For graphics I went with a EVGA GeForce 9500 GT. This upgrade increased the Windows Experience Index for gaming graphics from 3.0 to 5.4, the Aero graphics went from 3.9 to 5.9 I also will install 2 x 2GB of Crucial DDr2 PC 6400 800mhz C6 non-ECC and nonbuffered memory in place of the 2 X 1GB currently in the 2nd bank to max out the memory at 8GB. The additional upgrades cost $135(I got the graphics card for $45 after rebate). Added to the $675 for the stock a6550 HP, makes my total investment $810. I realize that if you read this in 6 months that may not sound that great. Thats how it is with computers because the technology gets dated so fast. However, this should be a good machine for the next 5 years or so. Its unfortunate that PC companies skimp on the Power supplies, but that is pretty much the norm. This computer comes with Windows Vista installed and no back up disks. The desktop can be restored to factory condition from a 2nd partition on the hard drive. They state that you can also create restoration back up disks. The recommend medium is DVD+R. I tried to create these disks but all 3 disks I attempted were rejected due to errors. The verification process is extreme because the back up needs to be an exact copy. The verification process takes a good while so I gave up on creating the disks. They can be purchased from HP. There are better restoration programs available from 3rd party software. I will be doing a review on Paragon's disk management suite in the future. I have not had any problems running my previous software. I installed PaintShop Pro 7 and it works fine running in compatibility mode. Office XP works well also.
Doesn't Get Much Better Than This! December 13, 2008 Cuppa (Easton, PA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Yes! If you're tech savvy, you could build your own PC or buy a custom tricked out over-clocked monster; For a price! However, if you just want a PC with power to spare out of the box at a fair price, this is it. The HP Pavilion A6650F Desktop PC comes with what most new PC's do. Some customized content, trial and registered software and a cool startup video. But what the Pavilion A6650F comes with that most don't is the AMD Phenom x4 Quad-Core Processor. I won't go into details here but this thing flies! I watched an HD 1080P movie trailer full screen and in a window with Media Player 11 and it never skipped a beat. The included Muvee autoProducer movie creator rendered a one minute WMV-HD video in 2.5 minutes. It was like watching the video in fast slow-motion as it rendered. It rendered a DV-AVI video faster than realtime. Wow! With 6 GB of memory your programs will cruise and the 500GB harddrive will hold all of those documents, pictures and audio files you need plus more. The sound is great. 7.1 audio that really pumps it out if you have good external speakers. Windows Vista 64 bit SP1 actually comes to life on this PC. The Aero interface is smooth and silky. Why 4 stars you ask? It comes with Windows Vista Home Premium instead of Ultimate. I hoped it had more internal PC card slots. It only comes with one PCIe 16x, two PCIe 1x slots and one PCI slot. No PCIe 4x slots. However, all slots are free. It does have a EIDE connector for your legacy harddrive or ROM drive. On the plus side it has 4 Sata-300 connectors. It has USB 2 and firewire connections. It has CyberLink DVD Suite Deluxe and Power2Go so you can watch DVDs and burn CD's and Dvd's too. And to top it off: Windows Media Center! For those who want more than a mere PC at a great price, This is it. So maybe 4.5 stars. Anyway you look at it. For the price, you just can't beat it for power and looks.
