Solid guide for advanced users August 26, 2010 Z. Freeman (Austin, TX) The first thing to know about this book is that this isn't a book for someone just interested in learning how to use WordPress for the first time. That's why it has the word "Professional" in the title. Wrox does a good job of distinguishing between Beginner books and Professional books. I've used their books for XML, .Net, and SQL Server and haven't been disappointed. You just have to know whether you're in the "Beginner" phase or the "Professional" phase of your learning with a particular topic.
This book is aimed at developers who might use WordPress for the more intense things that it can do - in other words, using it as a WordPress developer, not as someone who just uses WordPress as a content management system. There is information on migrating your current site to WordPress, messing with the databse, debugging PHP code, and other development-level topics. If that's the level at which you're looking to use WordPress then this book is for you and seems to be especially helpful and straightforward with lots of exmaples, like most Wrox books.
I didn't put any of this information into practice as I was just more interested in seeing what might be included in a "Professional" level book on WordPress (I was surprised by how much it can do), so I can't give any feedback on whether or not it helps in practice, but in theory it seems like they've put down a solid guide to WordPress.
Useful for non-programmers? July 21, 2010 Chen Sun (Houston, TX United States) As a marketing person, I read tech books to gain an overall perspective so as to converse with developers and specify what is needed. The book's first 67 pages are not programming code focused and are summaries of Wordpress's history, functionality, admin controls, community, philosophy, hosting options, and initial download and configuration.
As a concise guide to WordPress, these 67 pages are hard to beat, as it is very condensed writing. So, if the reader is smart and wants to read only 67 pages to figure out what WordPress is and can do, this is a good book.
Exactly you need if you work under the hood!! July 5, 2010 Squire Man (France) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book, well written, oriented toward the developper...
This book give answers to the questions just before you ask them yourself !
Very practical, crystal clear explanations, no blaa-blaa.
Highly recommended !
Superb Book - Everything wanted and a bit more June 16, 2010 javajunki 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is really a superb book...easy to read, comprehensive, clear and yet concise. Although I've used WordPress for years, my skills have remained in what I would consider the advanced novice category; a few tweaks or occassional changes but nothing special. This book makes it easy to customize, create desired changes in a jiffy and takes the mystery (and cost) out of modifcations that others charge for...best of all, it's written so that even non-technical people can pull it off with ease.
Items are divided into easy to find, easy to follow sections with the type of tasks people really use; case in point, pushing content to other sites and creating a taxonomy. Theme information as well as configurations are things I have done in the past but only with time and effort...by the time I get around to making more changes I've forgotten what I did last time. This is the perfect reminder that takes the guesswork and pain out of making my own changes or having to hire others to do the job for me.
I had the pleasure of reviewing two WordPress books originally thinking the other would be more advanced...instead, this one was. It is exactly what I was searching for...superb book!
Bottom line...this is a KEEPER for anyone that uses Wordpress.
This Book Is A "Must Have" June 10, 2010 Jonathan Weiss (New York, USA) Whether you're a WordPress novice or a coding genius, this book is for you! It contains many tips and tricks that even some advanced developers aren't aware of, while also enabling the new developer to get on his/her feet and start coding. It's an easy read with clear explanations of how to put various examples to work. If you're interested in WordPress or are looking to enhance your coding skills, this book is definitely a "must have."
